Did you know the olfactory membrane is the only place in the body where the central nervous system comes in direct contact with the environment!
Aside from olfactory stimuli, all sensory information initially comes through the thalamus which is known as the brain’s processing center. The sense of smell is first processed by the limbic lobe of the brain which is the emotional center of the brain.
This means before we even know we are in contact with a scent, we have already received and reacted to it!
This offers some explanation as to why our sense of smell is so closely linked to mood and emotions!
